startled; with a fright; alarmed

Describes the sudden physical or emotional jolt when surprised, scared, or caught off guard. Often used with する or と.

• 突とつ然ぜん名な前まえを呼よばれて、ぎくりとした。

  I was startled when someone suddenly called my name.

• 彼かれはその質しつ問もんにぎくりとしたようだった。

  He seemed taken aback by that question.
