Technical networking term: a mechanism in connection-oriented networks where a call or connection setup is rolled back to a previous node when a failure occurs, allowing an alternate path to be tried.
In ATM networks, crankback is used to search for an alternate route.
When crankback occurs, the connection request is returned to the previous node.
