Shepherd's beaked whale
A species of beaked whale (Tasmacetus shepherdi). The name is a direct loan from English 'Tasmanian whale', referring to its discovery near Tasmania.
Shepherd's beaked whales are sometimes seen off the coasts of New Zealand and Tasmania.
Kanji spelling using 鯨 for 'whale'. Rarely used; the kana form is strongly preferred.
