triaxial cell
Specialized term used in geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics for a device that applies three independent principal stresses to a soil specimen.
The shear strength of the soil is measured using a triaxial cell.
Compound of 三 (san, 'three'), 軸 (jiku, 'axis'), and 室 (shitsu, 'chamber'). The term is a direct calque of the English 'triaxial cell'.
