servants' kitchen
Historical term for a kitchen used by servants in a traditional Japanese household, often located in a lower or separate area.
In large residences of the Edo period, there was a kitchen for servants called a shimodaidokoro.
Compound of 下 (shimo, 'lower') and 台所 (daidokoro, 'kitchen'), referring to a kitchen situated in a lower or less prominent part of a residence.
