Rare term for borrowing a light, typically for a cigarette or pipe. Mostly replaced by 火を借りる in modern speech.
In the old days, it was common to borrow a light from a neighbor.
Compound of 借り (kari, 'borrowing') + 火 (hi, 'fire'), with rendaku voicing. The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term is now rare.
