Japanese person (historical term)
Historical term used in ancient China and by the Ainu to refer to Japanese people. Not used in modern standard Japanese to refer to contemporary Japanese individuals.
The term 'Wajin' appears in ancient Chinese documents.
The Ainu sometimes called the Wajin 'Shisamu'.
Standard kanji form; historically the primary spelling.
Alternate kanji form; less common but still used.
From Chinese 倭人 (wōrén), an ancient Chinese name for the people of Japan. The character 倭 was later replaced by 和 in many contexts.
