僭せんす

Rare literary verb meaning to arrogantly seize a position or title. Modern Japanese normally uses 僭称する or 僭越ながら. Cross-referenced with 僭する, which is the more common form.

• 古ふるい文ぶん献けんでは、王おう位いを僭せんすという表ひょう現げんが見みられる。

  In old documents, the expression 'to usurp the throne' can be found.

  '僭す' is hardly used today; '僭称する' is the common form.
