convertible banknotes
Historical financial term for banknotes that could be exchanged for specie (gold or silver). Now mainly used in historical or economic contexts.
Convertible banknotes were issued during the Meiji period.
Compound of 兌換 (だかん, 'conversion') and 券 (けん, 'certificate'). The term became common in the late 19th century with the establishment of the modern Japanese banking system.
