noun
general average; general average loss
A maritime law principle where all parties in a sea venture proportionally share losses resulting from a voluntary sacrifice of part of the ship or cargo to save the whole in an emergency.
共同海損が宣言されると、船主と荷主は損失を分担する。
When general average is declared, the shipowner and cargo owners share the loss.
Compound of 共同 (kyōdō, 'joint, common') and 海損 (kaison, 'sea damage, average'), itself from 海 (kai, 'sea') and 損 (son, 'loss, damage'). The term is a direct translation of the English legal term 'general average'.
