A traditional Japanese unit of volume, still used for measuring sake and rice. One shō equals about 1.8 litres.

In the past, rice was measured in shō.
升 and 石 are both traditional Japanese volume units, but 石 (こく) is a much larger measure (100倍 the size of 升).
From Chinese 升 (shēng), a traditional unit of volume. The character has been used in Japan since ancient times.
