Botanical term for one of the cells at the chalazal end of the embryo sac in angiosperms. Used in plant embryology.
In the embryo sac of angiosperms, antipodal cells are located opposite the micropyle.
Compound of 反足 (はんそく, 'antipodal') and 細胞 (さいぼう, 'cell'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain; the term is a modern botanical coinage.
