In Japanese kanji studies, a reading that became established through usage rather than being directly derived from Chinese. Contrasts with 呉音 and 漢音.

Wu reading
Archaic Heian-period term for the Wu reading of a kanji, as opposed to the Han reading. Now replaced by 呉音.
The reading 'cha' for 茶 is an example of a customary on-reading.
In the Heian period, 和音 was used to refer to the Wu reading.
