mountain well
Archaic term for a well located in the mountains. Not used in contemporary Japanese outside of historical or literary contexts.
An old document records that 'the water of the mountain well is cold and clear.'
Compound of 山 (yama, 'mountain') and 井 (i, 'well'). The reading やまい is a straightforward combination of the kun'yomi of both characters.
