Archaic term for homeschooling, literally 'garden teaching'. Refers to education at home, often by parents. Cross-referenced with 庭訓 (ていきん), a more common term for the same concept.

An expansion of 庭訓, “instruction in the courtyard,” alluding to the Analects account of Confucius instructing his son as the son crossed the courtyard. It consequently came to denote education given within the home.
