manjū (polite/childish/archaic)
Polite, feminine, or childish term for まんじゅう (manjū, a steamed bun with filling). Archaic in modern Japanese; now mostly replaced by まんじゅう or おまんじゅう.

In old court ladies' language, manjū was called 'oman', I hear.
Archaic kanji spelling; the word is normally written in kana.
Standard modern spelling; the kanji form is rarely used.
Contraction of おまんじゅう, itself a polite form of まんじゅう. The kanji 御饅 is ateji; the exact historical derivation is uncertain.
