Refers to the office or person acting as ruler when the monarch is a minor, incapacitated, or absent. In Japanese history, the 摂政 (Sesshō) was a powerful regent position, often held by members of the Fujiwara clan.

• 平へい安あん時じ代だいには、藤ふじ原わら氏しが摂せっ政しょうの地ち位いを独どく占せんした。

  During the Heian period, the Fujiwara clan monopolized the position of regent.

• 天皇てんのうが幼おさないため、摂せっ政しょうが政せい務むを代だい行こうする。
