Historical term referring collectively to the Sesshō (regent) and Kanpaku (chief advisor) in the Japanese imperial court. Primarily used in historical or academic contexts.
During the Heian period, the regent and advisor families held real political power.
Compound of 摂 (from 摂政, regent) and 関 (from 関白, chief advisor). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term conventionally refers to these two high court offices.
