Archaic term for a bridge made of wooden planks. Not used in modern everyday Japanese; encountered mainly in historical contexts or place names.
江戸時代には、板橋が多く使われていた。
In the Edo period, wooden plank bridges were widely used.
Compound of 板 (ita, 'board, plank') and 橋 (hashi, 'bridge'), with rendaku voicing of hashi to bashi. The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the word transparently describes a bridge made of planks.
