Japanese pagoda tree; Sophora japonica
A deciduous tree native to East Asia, often planted in parks and along streets. The scientific name is Styphnolobium japonicum (formerly Sophora japonica).
There is a large Japanese pagoda tree in the park.
Kanji form is rare and not commonly used in everyday writing.
Hiragana spelling, also used.
The Japanese name エンジュ is of uncertain origin. The kanji 槐 is a Chinese character for the pagoda tree, adopted into Japanese.
