ayumi-ashi; sliding step in kendo
A kendo footwork technique where the feet slide along the floor without lifting, used for smooth forward or backward movement.
In basic kendo practice, we repeatedly drill moving forward and backward using ayumi-ashi.
The key to ayumi-ashi is to move the feet as if sliding them along the floor.
Compound of 歩み (ayumi, 'walking') and 足 (ashi, 'foot'). The term is specific to kendo and describes a sliding walking step.
