Meteorological term for a region near the equator with little wind, especially the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Also used figuratively for a stagnant situation.

• 帆はん船せんは無む風ふう帯たいに入はいって動うごけなくなった。

  The sailing ship entered the doldrums and became becalmed.

• 交こう渉しょうは無む風ふう帯たいに入はいったように進しん展てんがない。

  The negotiations are in a dead calm, making no progress.
