however; even so; be that as it may

A somewhat formal or literary conjunction used to concede a point while introducing a contrasting statement. Similar to しかし or けれども, but with a slightly old-fashioned or written feel.

• 努ど力りょくした。されど、結けっ果かは伴ともなわなかった。

  I made an effort. However, the results did not follow.

• 彼かれは若わかい。されど、その考かんがえは深ふかい。

  He is young. Even so, his thinking is profound.
