Historical term for a guard post or checkpoint, especially in the Edo period. Not used for modern police boxes.

• 江え戸ど時じ代だい、街かい道どうには番ばん所しょが置おかれていた。

  In the Edo period, guardhouses were placed along the highways.

• 旅たび人びとは番ばん所しょで通つう行こう手て形がたを改あらためられた。
