Historical term for a guard serving a daimyo, the emperor, or a similar high-ranking figure in pre-modern Japan.

• 江え戸ど時じ代だい、番ばん衆しゅうは大だい名みょうの屋や敷しきを警けい護ごした。

  In the Edo period, guards protected the daimyo's residence.

• 番ばん衆しゅうの役やく目めは、夜や間かんの見み回まわりも含ふくまれていた。

  The duties of the guards included night patrols as well.
