leucism; pigmentation loss
A biological term for a condition in which an animal has reduced pigmentation, resulting in white or pale coloration but not the red eyes of albinism.
That leucistic peacock still has dark eyes.
Leucism differs from albinism in that melanin is not completely absent.
Compound of 白 (はく, 'white') + 変種 (へんしゅ, 'variety, mutation'), literally 'white variety'. The term is used in biology to describe leucistic organisms.
