Historical term for a special administrative division in the Nara period, specifically for areas containing a detached palace (Yoshino and Izumi). Archaic; not used in modern administrative contexts.
In the Nara period, special administrative divisions called Yoshino-gen and Izumi-gen were established.
In the Dazaifu, there was an official post called gen, ranking below the Sochi, Daini, and Shōni.
