utsurigami; special paper given in return for a gift

A traditional Japanese custom: when receiving a gift, one gives a sheet of special paper (often decorated) as a token of gratitude. The term is culturally specific and may be unfamiliar even to some modern Japanese speakers.

• お歳せい暮ぼをいただいたので、移うつり紙がみを添そえてお礼れいをした。

  Since I received a year-end gift, I expressed my thanks with a sheet of utsurigami.

• 昔むかしは、贈おくり物ものをもらったら移うつり紙がみを返かえすのが礼れい儀ぎだった。

  In the old days, it was polite to give back utsurigami when you received a present.
