chikuzenni; simmered chicken and vegetables
A traditional Japanese dish from the Chikuzen region (now part of Fukuoka). Typically includes chicken, taro, carrot, burdock, lotus root, and konnyaku, simmered in a soy-based broth. Often served in Osechi (New Year's cuisine) or as a home-style side dish.
I made chikuzenni for the New Year's dishes.
Chikuzenni is full of root vegetables and has a good nutritional balance.
Named after the former Chikuzen Province (筑前国), now part of Fukuoka Prefecture, where the dish originated. The name literally means 'Chikuzen simmered dish'.
