A vertical pipe attached to the outside of a building that carries rainwater from the roof gutter down to the ground or a drain.

Standard kanji spelling; 縦 means 'vertical' and 樋 means 'gutter/pipe'.
Variant using 竪, an older form of 縦 also meaning 'vertical'. Less common but still seen.
Compound of 縦 (tate, 'vertical') and 樋 (toi, 'gutter/pipe'). The reading たてどい is a standard rendaku form.
