storage pit (archaeology)
Archaeological term for a pit used to store food or goods, especially associated with the Jōmon to Yayoi periods in Japan.
Many storage pits from the Jōmon period have been found at this site.
It is thought that food such as acorns was stored in the storage pits.
Compound of 貯蔵 (storage) and 穴 (hole, pit). The term is a modern archaeological designation for prehistoric storage pits.
