Rare, formal term for a prisoner of war. In modern Japanese, 捕虜 (ほりょ) is the standard word.

• 古こ文ぶん書しょには「軍ぐん虜りょ」という表ひょう記きが見みられるが、現げん代だいでは「捕ほ虜りょ」が一いっ般ぱん的てきだ。

  The notation 軍虜 can be seen in old documents, but nowadays 捕虜 is the common term.
