loop-shaped monk's stole
A Buddhist liturgical garment: a stole worn around the neck, often by lay practitioners or monks during ceremonies. The term is specific to Japanese Buddhism.
During the memorial service, attendees wear a loop-shaped stole.
From 輪 (wa, 'loop') + 袈裟 (kesa, 'monk's robe/stole'). The reading げさ is a voiced form of けさ due to rendaku.
