農のう兵へい

Historical term for a military unit made up of conscripted farmers, primarily in pre-modern Japan. Not used for modern conscription.

• 江え戸ど時じ代だいの農のう兵へいは、普ふ段だんは農のう業ぎょうに従じゅう事じし、戦せん時じには兵へい士しとして動どう員いんされた。

  During the Edo period, farmer-soldiers normally worked in agriculture and were mobilized as soldiers in wartime.
