backstitch
A sewing stitch that goes back over the previous stitch to create a strong, continuous line. Used in hand sewing and embroidery.

Compound of 返し (kaeshi, 'returning') + 縫い (nui, 'sewing'), literally 'return-stitch'. The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term transparently describes the back-and-forth motion of the stitch.
