Used when responding to someone's words or actions with a similar force, often in a confrontational or retaliatory manner. Can be verbal or physical.
He insulted me, so I retorted.
やられたらやり返すのが彼の主義だ。
His principle is to hit back when hit.

Means to do something again, often because the first attempt was unsatisfactory. Less common than やり直す (やります) in modern Japanese.
失敗したので、最初からやり返した。
