temporary imperial palace (Heian period)
Historical term for a temporary imperial residence built outside the main imperial palace (内裏) during the Heian period, often used when the main palace was damaged or under construction.

In the Heian period, when the imperial palace became unusable due to fire or other reasons, aristocratic residences were sometimes used as temporary imperial palaces (里内裏).
Compound of 里 (sato, 'village' or 'outside the capital') and 内裏 (dairi, 'imperial palace'), referring to a palace built away from the main imperial compound.
