postal delivery; mail service
Historical term for the delivery of packages and postal service, especially in the context of early modern Japan's relay system. Not used in contemporary Japanese; modern equivalents are 郵便 (ゆうびん) or 宅配 (たくはい).
The postal relay system was an important means of communication from the Edo period through the early Meiji era.
post office (historical)
Compound of 駅 (station, relay) and 逓 (relay, transmit). The second character is an older form; the modern equivalent is 逓信 (ていしん, communications). The word reflects the historical relay-based postal system.
