out with the demon, in with fortune
A ritual chant recited during Setsubun (節分) while scattering roasted soybeans to drive away evil spirits and invite good luck. Often said repeatedly.
On Setsubun night, I loudly chanted 'Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi' while scattering beans.
豆まき is the bean-scattering activity itself, while 鬼は外福は内 is the chant spoken during that activity.
節分 is the seasonal festival day (February 3rd) when this chant is traditionally used.
A traditional Setsubun chant. The exact origin is uncertain, but it reflects the folk belief of driving out oni (demons/misfortune) and welcoming fuku (good fortune) into the home.
