Expressing a necessary prerequisite

All five patterns say that a result is blocked because something essential is missing. Choose by asking what is missing: completion of an earlier step, enough basis to judge, an expected component, a general prerequisite, or a foundation you want to present as absolutely indispensable.

The result must genuinely be blocked

These are stronger than ordinary statements of order, dependence, or absence. In each case, the second part must say that something cannot happen, cannot be known or judged, would be seriously inadequate, or is otherwise impossible without the stated condition. If the condition is merely helpful or preferred, none of these patterns is a good fit.

Choose by the kind of missing condition

There is not yet enough basis

plain negative form + ことには

A test, observation, fact, quality, or other condition is needed before something can be known, judged, decided, or achieved.

Although the first part is negative in form, the meaning is that its positive condition must be met.

An expected element is being removed

noun + きにしては

You imagine excluding a normally included person, contribution, fact, or component and say that the result would then fail.

Shorter forms meaning simply “with something omitted” do not by themselves make this impossibility claim.

A general resource or condition is indispensable

noun + なしには・なしでは

You are making a formal explanation that a resource, process, agreement, or other condition is required.

For a required action, use its dictionary form followed by ことなしには or ことなしでは.

An indispensable foundation is asserted forcefully

noun + なくして(は)

You want the tone of a thesis, public appeal, policy statement, or weighty conclusion.

Its rhetorical weight is usually excessive for trivial everyday needs.

Completed step or missing basis?

A project cannot move forward, but the speaker can frame the obstacle as either an unfinished procedure or insufficient information.

ひつようしょるいぜんていしゅつしてからでないとしんはじめられません。

The review cannot begin until all the required documents have been submitted.

Analyze

The focus is a concrete step that must be completed first.

げんぶんかくにんしないことにはしゅうとうはんだんできない。

Without inspecting the site personally, it is impossible to judge whether the repair cost is reasonable.

Analyze

The inspection supplies the missing basis for a judgment.

Takeaway: Use てからでないと when completion and order are central. Use ないことには when the condition supplies the basis needed to know, judge, decide, or succeed.

Removing a component versus lacking a prerequisite

きにしては invites the reader to imagine taking an expected element out of the project or explanation. なしでは more broadly states that a resource or condition is absent and the result cannot stand.

せんもんスタッフのきょうりょくきにしては、このてんていどおりひらけない。

If the specialist staff's cooperation is excluded, this exhibition cannot open as scheduled.

Analyze

せんもんスタッフのきょうりょくなしでは、このてんていどおりひらけない。

Without the specialist staff's cooperation, this exhibition cannot open as scheduled.

Analyze

Formal statement or forceful principle?

A writer says that local agreement is indispensable to continuing a public project.

いきごうなしでは、このぎょうけいぞくできない。

Without local agreement, this project cannot continue.

Analyze

This is a direct formal explanation of a necessary condition.

いきごうなくしては、このぎょうけいぞくできない。

Without local agreement, this project cannot continue.

Analyze

The factual content is similar, but this version sounds more like a forceful public principle.

Takeaway: The difference is chiefly rhetorical force. なしでは is the broader formal choice; なくしては makes the prerequisite sound like a foundational truth.
