These forms state that a judgment, rule, or decision remains unchanged regardless of the category, identity, or circumstances involved. They sound formal and often give the conclusion a firm, principled tone.
How the meaning works
The part before the target form presents a category or circumstance that might normally matter. The following clause then gives a rule, judgment, or decision that holds anyway. The construction therefore emphasizes independence from that condition, not simple uncertainty about whether it is true.
Three core patterns
Notice that each conclusion is firm and remains valid across the condition introduced.
誰であれ、規則に違反した者には同じ処分を適用する。
Whoever it may be, the same penalty will be applied to anyone who violates the rules.
Analyze相手が大企業であろうと、不正な要求には応じない。
Even if the other party is a major corporation, we will not comply with an improper demand.
Analyze経緯がどうあれ、最終的な責任は管理者にある。
Whatever the circumstances leading up to it, ultimate responsibility lies with the administrator.
AnalyzeNearby concessive patterns
であれ～であれ explicitly names two representative alternatives. Forms such as にしても and にせよ can attach to a wider range of clauses and are generally less elevated. The pattern ようが～まいが specifically contrasts doing an action with not doing it.
