かたわらAlongside a main long-term activity
かたわら presents a continuing secondary activity carried on alongside a main occupation, course of study, responsibility, or other long-term activity. The same person normally performs both activities.
Main and secondary roles
The first activity is normally presented as the person's main role or established responsibility. The activity after かたわら is another activity maintained over the same general period. The two activities do not need to occur at exactly the same time each day.
Two core formations
Both examples describe one person maintaining two roles over time.

AnalyzeLong-term roles versus momentary overlap
かたわら frames two activities as continuing roles over a substantial period. By contrast, ながら can describe two actions overlapping during a single occasion.

He read the newspaper while drinking coffee.
