まぎれにDriven by overwhelming emotion or confusion

まぎれに says that someone acts rashly while overwhelmed by anger, frustration, desperation, confusion, or a similar force. It usually presents the action as poorly judged, impulsive, or regrettable.

What the pattern highlights

The phrase gives both the driving force and the manner of the action: the person is so caught up in a feeling or chaotic situation that sound judgment weakens. It therefore fits insults, excuses, lies, blame, reckless acts, and similar behavior better than calm or carefully planned actions.

Emotion or confusion taking control

はらまぎれにてんいんにきついことをぶつけてしまった。

In a fit of anger, I lashed out at the store clerk.

Analyze

Literally: Overwhelmed by anger, I ended up hurling harsh words at the store clerk.

Analyze

Choose a compatible action

The following action must plausibly result from anger, pressure, desperation, or confusion. A calm action may be grammatically attachable, but it will normally sound mismatched because this pattern implies that the person's judgment or self-control has been disrupted.

Impulsive force versus deliberate feeling

まぎれに presents emotion or confusion as weakening control. By contrast, めて describes deliberately putting a feeling or force into an action. The first commonly explains a regrettable outburst; the second can describe a careful, purposeful expression.

はらまぎれにつくえをたたいた。

In a fit of anger, he struck the desk.

Analyze

The anger drives an impulsive physical reaction.

いかりをめてこうぶんいた。

She wrote the letter of protest with anger behind every word.

Analyze

This is the neighboring deliberate-feeling pattern: the writer consciously expresses anger through the letter.
