On the same level as

Attach directly to a noun naming a recognizable standard to say that something is roughly on that standard's level. The comparison may be complimentary, critical, or simply descriptive.

How the comparison works

The attached noun is the benchmark, not the thing being described. The context supplies the relevant scale: knowledge, speed, size, income, workload, service, and similar qualities. The comparison usually means approximately the same level, not mathematically exact equality.

The three main forms

Notice how the ending changes according to what follows.

かのじょせんもんしきけんきゅうしゃみだ

Analyze

Praise or criticism comes from the benchmark

Matching a high standard often sounds complimentary, but the form itself does not express praise. A high price, excessive workload, or unexpectedly heavy fuel use can make the same comparison critical.

いちりゅうてんみのだんなのに、りょうへいぼんだった。

The prices were on par with a first-rate restaurant, but the food was ordinary.

Analyze

Compact benchmark versus an explicit comparison

attaches directly to the benchmark noun and is especially natural in compact, conventional comparisons. おなじくらい states the same degree more explicitly and can be used more freely when the comparison needs to be spelled out.
