すらEven (formal emphasis)
すら marks an extreme or unexpected example and means “even,” usually with a formal, written, or somewhat literary tone.
The implied scale
すら selects the person, thing, quantity, or action that seems least likely to fit the statement. If that extreme case fits, the listener is expected to infer that less surprising cases fit as well.

Even experts could not decipher the code.
AnalyzeExperts are the people most likely to succeed, so their failure strongly implies that others could not succeed either.
Positive and negative statements
The construction is not limited to negative sentences. In a positive sentence, it can identify the person or case least expected to succeed; in a negative sentence, it often identifies the person or case most expected to succeed.

AnalyzeBeginners are presented as the group least expected to understand, so understanding by more experienced readers is taken for granted.
What comes before it
Place すら immediately after the focused expression. A necessary case particle may remain before it, and an action can be turned into a noun-like expression with こと.

AnalyzeThe entire action of publishing the results is treated as the extreme example.
Choosing among similar forms
さえ is the neutral everyday choice for “even,” while すら gives the same basic scale a more formal or literary force. だに is still more literary and is largely restricted to established combinations. まで can also be translated as “even,” but it presents something as an unexpectedly included endpoint rather than directly choosing an extreme member of an expectation scale.
