たら最後・
Marks an event as a point of no return: once it happens, a serious and usually undesirable consequence is expected to follow almost inevitably.
A point of no return
The first event is presented as crossing a threshold. The second part then describes an outcome that will be extremely difficult or impossible to stop, undo, or escape. Common results include losing control, being unable to recover something, or becoming trapped in a worsening chain of events.
この暗号鍵が盗まれたら最後、機密データはすべて危険にさらされる。
Once this encryption key is stolen, all the confidential data will inevitably be put at risk.
AnalyzeThe theft is treated as the point after which the damage can no longer be contained.
The more literary variant
敵に居場所を知られたが最後、逃げ切ることはできない。
Once the enemy discovers the location, there will be no escaping.
Analyzeたが最後 gives the warning a firm, dramatic, somewhat literary tone.
Use it for consequences that feel inescapable
This construction is not a general-purpose way to say “once.” It normally warns of an adverse result and presents the connection as nearly certain in the stated situation. It therefore sounds excessive for harmless routine sequences such as eating after arriving home.
Leaving the result unsaid
When the danger is already unmistakable, the result may be left unstated. Ending with たら最後だ can itself mean that there will be no way back.
そのリンクは端末をウイルスに感染させる。開いたら最後だよ。
That link will infect the device with a virus. Once it is opened, there is no going back.
AnalyzeThe preceding sentence makes the harmful consequence clear, so it does not need to be repeated.
Choosing among similar warnings
Basic たら merely sets a condition and does not imply inevitability. ようものなら warns about attempting or allowing a risky action, while たら最後 focuses on the irreversible threshold after the action occurs. たらそれまでだ says that the matter would end or become pointless; the target construction instead emphasizes the inescapable aftermath.
