かぎりではAs far as the available information shows

かぎりでは limits a conclusion to information obtained or retained in a particular way: “as far as I have seen, heard, checked, known, or can remember.” It leaves open the possibility that other information could lead to a different conclusion.

The phrase names your evidence boundary

The verb before かぎりでは tells the listener how the information was obtained: by looking, asking, checking, investigating, knowing, or remembering. The main clause then gives the judgment supported by that information. The judgment can be stated directly; the construction itself already restricts it to the named evidence.

Different sources of information

Notice that each sentence first identifies an information source and then gives a conclusion that applies only within that range.

As far as I have investigated, there does not appear to be an age restriction for this grant.

Qualified does not mean vague

This construction does not necessarily express doubt about the information already checked. Rather, it avoids extending the conclusion beyond that information. A direct ending is therefore natural when the evidence supports it, but the sentence should not claim certainty about facts outside the stated range.

Evidence range versus maximum extent

かぎりでは means “judging from the stated evidence.” By contrast, かぎ without では can mean “to the fullest available extent.” In the following sentence, no conclusion is being drawn from evidence; the view itself extends as far as possible.

This is the maximum-extent use, not the information-range use taught on this page.
