Unresolved uncertainty
のやら and ものやら leave a question unresolved, showing that the speaker cannot tell what, why, how, or whether something is the case. They often convey puzzlement, worry, or reflection rather than a neutral request for information.
Leaving the question open
The speaker raises a question but does not resolve it. The construction is therefore natural when someone is genuinely at a loss, wondering privately, or expressing concern. The uncertainty can be followed by an explicit statement such as 分からない, or the sentence can simply trail off at the unresolved question.
Embedded and sentence-final uses
I have absolutely no idea what he is hiding.
AnalyzeThe question word identifies exactly what remains unresolved.
Who knows what will become of their relationship from here?
AnalyzeThe sentence ends with the uncertainty itself, creating a reflective tone.
Even I cannot tell whether this plan will really work.
AnalyzeThere is no question word, but the unresolved issue is clearly whether the plan will work.
Neutral inquiry versus personal puzzlement
かどうか neutrally embeds a yes-or-no question. By contrast, のやら and ものやら present the speaker as unable to settle the question and often add worry, perplexity, or reflection.
Please check whether the meeting will start as scheduled.
AnalyzeThis is a neutral request to verify information, not an expression of personal puzzlement.
Uncertainty versus listing
A repeated やら pattern lists representative things or states. It does not leave a question unresolved and should not be confused with clause-final のやら or ものやら.
Books, documents, and other things are piled on the desk.
AnalyzeThe repeated form lists examples; it does not express uncertainty.
