ていてはIf this continues (negative consequence)

Use this pattern to warn that if an action, habit, or state continues, an undesirable result will follow or an important goal will become impossible.

How the pattern works

The first clause describes something already continuing, repeatedly happening, or forming a habit. The second clause states the bad result: failure to reach a goal, inability to do something, damage, delay, or another unwanted outcome. The point is not merely that the first situation exists, but that allowing it to continue creates the problem.

Ongoing actions and habits

Notice that each first clause can naturally be understood as continuing or repeated, and each second clause gives a clear negative consequence.

まいばんかしをしていてはあさじゅぎょうしゅうちゅうできない。

If you keep staying up late every night, you won't be able to concentrate in morning classes.

Analyze

The time expression makes this a repeated habit rather than a one-time condition.

このままここでっていてはさいしゅうでんしゃわない。

If we keep waiting here like this, we won't make the last train.

Analyze

Here the action is already in progress, and the speaker warns against continuing it.

すうかくにんせずににゅうりょくしていては、ミスがりません。

If you keep entering the numbers without checking them, the mistakes won't decrease.

What the speaker is doing

This pattern often identifies exactly what needs to change. A teacher may point out a harmful study habit, a manager may warn about a work process, or someone may use it when advising themselves or a close acquaintance. Depending on tone and relationship, it can sound helpfully concerned or openly critical.

Do not lose the idea of continuation

Plain ては is broader and can present a single unfavorable condition; ていては deliberately preserves the ongoing or habitual force of ている. てばかりいる criticizes spending too much time on one activity, but it does not by itself state a conditional consequence. てはいられない means that circumstances leave no room to continue, rather than warning about the result that continued behavior would cause.
