So intense that one cannot help it

てしかたがない and てしょうがない express a feeling, sensation, concern, or urge that is so strong that the person experiencing it cannot control or ignore it.

What the construction emphasizes

The point is not merely that a feeling exists, but that it keeps pressing on the experiencer and is difficult to control. A particularly common pattern is になってしかたがない. The construction also works naturally with pain, heat, sleepiness, longing, anticipation, irritation, and similar strong experiences.

Typical feelings and sensations

I cannot stop worrying about the exam results.

Analyze

This is a characteristic use for a concern that repeatedly occupies one's mind.

My tooth has been hurting unbearably since last night.

Analyze

Here the construction intensifies a physical sensation.

I miss my family back home so much that I can hardly stand it.

Analyze

A desire ending behaves like an i-adjective here, changing to the form ending in たくて.

In conversation

A

It is unbearably hot, isn't it?

Analyze
B

Shall I open the window?

Analyze

しょうがない is especially natural in spontaneous conversation like this.

Whose feeling is it?

Because this construction describes an inner experience, an unmarked sentence most naturally presents the speaker's own feeling. For another person's feeling, show how you know it—for example, by reporting what that person said.

My mother says she is beside herself with worry because my brother is late coming home.

Analyze

The reporting expression makes clear that this is the mother's stated feeling.

Choosing among similar intensity expressions

てしかたがない and てしょうがない are broadly usable for strong, uncontrollable feelings, concerns, urges, and sensations. てたまらない more strongly presents the experience as unbearable and especially favors desires, likes, dislikes, and sensations. てならない is more restricted, often describes a thought or feeling that wells up spontaneously, and fits formal reflective writing more readily.
